Agartala, Mar 12: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tripura on Thursday held a high-level core committee meeting to chalk out political strategy ahead of the upcoming elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) and finalize probable candidate the by-election to the Dharmanagar Assembly constituency.
The meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha at the party’s state headquarters in Agartala, brought together several senior leaders to discuss organisational preparedness and electoral plans.
Among those present were BJP state president and MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, former Union minister Pratima Bhoumik, party’s state observer Rajdeep Ray, cabinet ministers Ratan Lal Nath and Pranajit Singha Roy, former MP Rebati Tripura, and party general secretaries Bipin Debbarma and Bhagaban Das.
Addressing reporters after the meeting, the Chief Minister said, the core committee held detailed deliberations on identifying a suitable nominee for the Dharmanagar by-election, which became necessary after the demise of Assembly Speaker Biswabandhu Sen.
The leadership also discussed political strategy for the forthcoming TTAADC polls, he said.
The meeting gained added importance amid ongoing speculation in political circles about possible shifts within the tribal political landscape ahead of the council elections.
Replying to questions about alliance equations, the Chief Minister said that both Tipra Motha and the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) continue to remain partners of the BJP in the state. However, he noted that a final decision on whether the party would contest the ADC elections independently or as part of the alliance would be taken later.
Reacting to recent political remarks by Pradyot Kishor Manikya Debbarma, founder of Tipra Motha, who recently suggested the possibility of a Tiprasa Chief Minister and capturing Agartala in the future, the Chief Minister said that in a democratic system everyone has the right to dream and express their political aspirations.
On being asked about reports by a section of media indicating joining of one Minister and several MLAs from Tipra Motha to BJP, Dr. Saha said, "I have seen the news. I am not aware of it. I think it's a rumour."
